*<Pulse Theory> is nominated for a Korean Music Awards for the "best jazz and crossover performance" (Jan 27, 2021)
Recorded live in GhettoAlive on January 15th, 2020, "Pulse Theory" is a 50 minute continuous group improvisation by saxophonist Sunjae Lee, pianist Eunyoung Kim, and drummer Dayeon Seok. All three performers also had a history of being regular performers in Ghetto Alive and thus shared a special resonance with the space. Drummer Dayeon Seok, currently one of the most sought after drummers in the New York jazz scene, was on tour in China and Korea in the wintertime and was invited to play an impromptu recording session by saxophonist Sunjae Lee, who also invited longtime collaborater Eunyoung Kim on piano. Sharing a love of free improvisation, the trio resolved to play a continuous set of improvisation with no other set guidelines.
Pulse Theory is the first release off of the new GhettoAlive Records label, supported by the venue GhettoAlive itself, which is one of the only places in Seoul where freely improvised music is performed. It was recorded live without any sound or distance isolation of the instruments to capture the natural sound of the group plus the ambiance of the room itself. The recording was mixed by Sunjae Lee and mastered by Eivind Opsvik, a renowned bassist and producer in New York.
